From rebranding to a revolutionary role in metals recovery

In a world where sustainable resource recovery is more critical than ever, Orivium is making waves. We’re doing this with a new name, a groundbreaking technology that could transform how the world extracts copper, and a key partnership.

Formerly known as EcoMetalx, Orivium has stepped into the spotlight by joining the prestigious Creative Copper Recovery cohort drivenpowered by BHP, and supported byalongside major industry players like South32 and Rio Tinto. Over 80% of the global copper reserves are found in the form of copper sulfide ores. Much of this is not commercially viable to extract (Science Direct).

The Creative Copper Recovery project is a high-stakes, high-impact initiative designed to address one of the resource sector’s most pressing challenges: How to extract copper faster, cleaner, and more efficiently. And Orivium technology is underpinning it all.

A unique approach to metal recovery

At its core, Orivium’s technology is a departure from the traditional methods of metal extraction. Rather than relying on high-temperature processes, toxic chemicals, or excessive energy consumption, Orivium’s solution operates at ambient temperatures, harnessing a proprietary liquid process to extract metals in their purest form.

It means that we no longer need to see metals in terms of waste, but as opportunities to extract additional resources waiting to be recovered. Orivium’s unique technology not only recovers valuable metals from e-waste and stranded assets but, in the process, generates hydrogen as a byproduct. This is itself a valuable resource that aligns with the global shift toward green energy.

The significance of the BHP Creative Copper Recovery cohort

Joining the BHP Creative Copper Recovery cohort is an opportunity for acceleration. The cohort is a collaborative initiative designed to bring together innovators, industry leaders, and experts to explore new solutions for metal recovery. With partners like South32 and Rio Tinto, and guidance from BHP’s world-class mentors, Orivium is in a unique position to refine its technology and explore new applications.

The timing could not be better. Global demand for copper is rising rapidly, driven by the transition to renewable energy, electric vehicles, and digital technologies. Yet the resource sector faces increasing pressure to minimise its environmental footprint. This global push for sustainability is forcing companies to rethink how they source and recover critical minerals. For the copper industry, this means finding ways to extract more metal using less energy, while minimising waste and environmental impact. Orivium’s technology answers this call in several ways:

  • Faster, cleaner extraction: The liquid process operates at ambient temperatures, avoiding the need for high energy inputs.
  • E-waste transformation: Electronic waste, often seen as a disposal problem, becomes a valuable resource.
  • Hydrogen byproduct: A clean, green energy source is generated as a natural part of the process.
  • Adaptable to existing processes: Orivium’s solution can integrate with current extraction methods or work as a standalone system.
  • Environmental remediation: Contaminated sites can be restored while recovering valuable metals.

A new name, a clear vision

Orivium’s recent rebranding from EcoMetalx reflects the same evolution and ambition that brought it into the Creative Copper Recovery cohort. The new name captures the idea of metals in their purest form: Revealed, refined, and recovered.

This is a new beginning and launching point for a critical trajectory for the company. We are excited to show the world how Orivium can transform metal recovery—not just for copper, but for a wide range of critical minerals.
